Looking Back at Italy with LisaMarie Gaeta

Lastly, here is my blog entry, from the student who has been composing this blog. Come sempre, like always, the Italian description is first and the English translation follows it. =]

Hi everyone, finally its my turn to write a post. These six weeks have gone by quickly. I am a bit sad to leave Genoa, the school A Door to Italy, and Italy. However, I had a great experience here with my friends and the Italian people. It was very difficult in the beginning to speak only in italian, especially because I had studied the language for only two quarters at RIT before I arrived here. I was always frustrated because I didn't know much vocabulary and other useful phrases. However, I studied Spanish for many years and this helped me learn Italian.

A Door to Italy is a great school and I liked the classes. The professors are nice, fun, and helpful. GianLuca is a great professor, and he really helped me improve my skills. My favorite activity was the educational games. They were interesting and I had fun trying to understand when we had to make a section of a conversation which we had listened to in class the day before. They helped me learn useful words and how to say my sentences with emphasis just like Italians do. I also liked creating and writing creative stories.

I enjoyed being in Genova and Italy in general. The people are very interesting and nice. In the first weeks, I couldn't understand that much when I heard people in the street. Now, I can understand much more and I am glad because I can understand most of the conversations that I pass by in the streets and when I have conversations with people.

The food is superb, the pizza, pasta, ice cream... everything is incredible.  At least I won't miss the food because it's the same that my grandpa makes every Sunday.

I am proud of this blog and happy to share these stories with all of you. It was very interesting to read and translate the descriptions of my friends. I know them better now and I feel more connected with them. Also, I learned  a ot from them. I hope you have all enjoyed them.

I saw Pisa and Florence last weekend. Pisa has the tower but there isn't anything else to do. The tower is beautiful but was crowded. After three hours, we left for Florence. Friday I took a walk in the city with Andrew and Jessica. Saturday morning the group went to Uffizzi. I saw many famous paintings. After the Uffizi, Andrew Jessica and I went to the restaurant "Little Brothers." They had delicious sandwiches for 2.50 euro. We went shopping and I bought a leather wallet. At two-thirty in the afternoon we met as a group to go to another museum. We saw David and after Mary, LisaMarie and Sammy and I took another walk and we saw the city. Saturday night was a lot of fun. At eight the group ate an enormous dinner! We ate at least 5 appetizers, 3 different types of pasta and tiramisu with strawberry wine. All of the food was delicious!

After dinner, Andrew and I met with five deaf people. There was a party in the street called "the white night" when the restaurants close at three in the morning. There were many people in the street. We talked for a long time and Andrew and I returned to the hotel at four in the morning. We saw the old bridge that night. I like Florence a lot. It is a beautiful city!

Mary Orth Hikes in the Alps and Sightsees in Turin

Mary Orth relives her visit to the Alps, relaxing in a thermal pool, and sightseeing in Turin. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

Last week I went for a run at the port and it seemed so unreal. This weekend was the same with the Alps! When we arrived, it was literally a breath of fresh air. The trees and the mountains were a change from the city and the smog. Our grand hotel had a stupendous thermal pool that was luxurious and calming. I didn't know that we were going to a spa and I didn't think to bring my bathing suit, so unfortunately I wasn't able to swim. Though it was okay because I put my legs in the water, but still it wasn't the same. Although my legs felt very soft after the spa.

For dinner the first night we had a beautiful evening together with an elegant ambiance. There were about at least ten different courses of food that were all too delicious! My favorite had to be the quiche or the ravioli. It was so good! But I digress...

The next morning, I went for a hike in the mountains for almost eight hours. I can't describe the magnificence of the nature that surrounded us. I felt like we were living in that picture on all the water bottles - with a light blue sky, mountains, rivers, green grass and a lovely cottage in the middle of everything. The weather was perfect with a calm breeze on a sunny day. It was worth it to wake up early. Our group climbed to the top to a frozen lake. Claudio told me that we were a third of the altitude of Mount Everest. I thought that was incredible and I was very proud that we did it! The panorama at the peak was different than any other place. I really felt like I was on top of the world, and at the same time very small. It was truly a sight that I will never forget. After we returned to the hotel, we had our class again for a bit and after, I relaxed near the pool.

Then, after the Alps, we left for Turin. It was marvelous! It was probably one of my favorite cities in Italy. The mixture of both the parks and the central architecture combine perfectly. We saw The National Cinema Museum, The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, The Royal Palace, Piazza San Carlo, Museum of Natural Science, and the Modern and Contemporanean Art Gallery. They were all great, but what I enjoyed the most were the Modern Art Museum and also the Cinema Museum!! So much fun! I would have liked to have more time in Turin. It was a great weekend!

Ricardo Rodriguez Relaxes in Liguria

This is Ricardo Rodriguez's experience during his free weekend in Sestri Levanti, Liguria. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it. (pictures to come)

Domenica siamo andati a Sestri Levanti.
_____________________________________________________________

Last Friday I went to play soccer with GianLuca, a professor at the school, Dominic, Claudio and some of GianLuca's friends. We went to a place outside the historic center Genoa. Since I don't know how to play soccer, I ran where they were playing. I liked it and was a good experience to meet other Italians.
Saturday I didn't do anything because I was very tired and I needed a day to relax and rest. We had planned to go to the beach at Sestri Levanti but we were very tired. I got a gelato with Claudio and then I came back home to sleep.
Sunday we went to Sestri Levanti. It was cloudy in the beginning of the day but by midday, the sun came out. I tanned in the sun. I liked the sea, the sand was white and beautiful. In the center there were many people and many places were open. We ate sandwiches that we had mad at our house. At Sestri we had eaten cannolis and other great desserts. I liked them the most and I would like a few days to visit Sicily. At the beach we met a student from Switzerland who was studying Italian at our school. She was there with her husband. At 4 we finished at the beach and we returned to Genoa. It was a good weekend but I am ready for Torino. I think that time is going by quickly. Yes, I am very happy that I have many good friends here in the program and they are making my experience here in Genoa even better.

Sienna and Sign Language with Andrew Donald

Andrew Donald visited Sienna and described his time talking with deaf Italians there. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

________________________________________________________________

Last Thursday, I went to a meeting with deaf Italians for the Italian government to approve Italian Sign Language. I met deaf Italians and I had a great conversation with them. I was very happy because I felt very connected with the deaf Italians. I was very motivated to learn Italian Sign Language and Italian deaf culture. Many Italians asked me about American culture and what the United States has (for example: the United States has very large cars and Italy has many small cars. The U.S. uses miles and Italy uses kilometers.) I was able to connect Italian deaf culture and American deaf culture because I found some similar things between the two cultures.
After the midterm exam and Italian classes, Tamara and I took trains to Sienna. We went to Sienna for the weekend to visit our friends, meet more deaf Italians and for Italian Sign Language. Last Saturday, Tamara and I met our friends and the group in the Sienna School program and we all went to the soccer game. There were deaf soccer teams there. I chatted with some of the deaf Italians. I met a man and his name was Fabio. He was very nice. I learned some more and enjoyed the conversation. We chatted about our lives in Italy and the United States.
My trip to Sienna was a surprise and adventurous. Meeting deaf Italians was a wonderful experience and I will never forget it. This experience is the culminating moment during my time in Italy. It was difficult but I was surprised because I had nice conversations with deaf Italians without using American Sign Language.

Nicole Formisano's Anticipation of the Alps

Nicole Formisano describes a helpful Italian conversation and her desire to sing in the Alps. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

__________________________________________________________________

For my weekend I did a lot of work, but at the same time I didn't do anything. Saturday, I started working on my thesis. I had two classes to draft my thesis, but now I need to fix the errors, change my bibliography, and also start coding for my research for the advertisements that I have found in the cities we have visited.

Then, after work, we needed to go to Vodafone. My blackberry had lots of problems with SMS and therefore Vodafone, the sister company of Verizon, maybe could have been able to help me. I went to Vodafone and I waited for approximately thirty minutes. There were a lot of people with cell phone problems.  I was nervous because I needed to speak in Italian about a difficult subject. However, to my surprise the woman had understood me but wasn't able to help me. Because my Blackberry was in English, she wasn't able to fix the problems. However I liked this experience because it helped me with my Italian. Furthermore, it was interesting because there are many English words that are used for cell phones and therefore, I think that I used Italian when I was able to use English.

Sunday morning, Lea, Lindsey and I went to Nervi only for 2 hours to tan for a bit. I met a woman on the beach who continuously talked about how the weather was hot. After Nervi I returned to my house and worked again. I feel that there will always be work for my thesis. :( Now, I am ready for Terme/Torino! This is because "The Sound of Music" is my favorite movie and like Elisabetta said, the Italian Alps are similar to the Alps in "The Sound of Music." Maybe I can be Julia Andrews for a day :)

Rome with Claudio Ippolito

Claudio Ippolito describes Republic Day and his short time in Rome. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

____________________________________________________________________

Thursday I left for Rome, the city that I love the most because it is breathtaking. That unexplainable feeling of superiority. Great, beautiful, historical, magestic… imperial, those are the words that come to mind when I think of it. Immediately upon arrival we left for the Republic Day. We saw a Rome that I didn’t know, everyone in the street, proud to be Italian, with that pride more than skin deep, I truly felt that pride as well and I was very happy to be a part of it thanks to my grandparents and parents. I saw along with my friends the extremely beautiful military parade. Also with the tricolor arrows (in the sky), I am sure I will never forget about that day.
After, we went to Villa Borghese, and the beauty of the gallery with Caravaggio and Bernini left me amazed. At one point, Corinne, Natalie, Ricardo and I rested on an enormous leather seat that looked like a bed merely to look at the frescoes on the ceiling that seemed unreal because of their magnificence and perfection. At night we went to dance at a place in Testaccio and we met the bartender of  “On the Rox” named Marco and we joked with him a lot. Later, we went to the disco and danced a bit. Saturday I returned to Genoa to see my mother whom I had not seen since December. We talked a lot about our family and about what had happened in these past months, and it was very nice to see her and to once again have this love that only your mother can give you.

Dominic Fioretti's First 2 Weeks at A Door to Italy

Dominic Fioretti describes his obstacles while learning Italian during his first two weeks in Italy. He also wrote about his experience meeting his family in San Lucido. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

_________________________________________________________________________

For the first week of school, we met the professors for our lessons. For the language lesson, we have GianLuca and Stefano, while for the culture lesson we have Alessandro. All the professors are very nice and patient. That is good because I learn slowly. The classes were very good even though I didn't understand everything that Stefano and GianLuca said. Tipically, I am good at school and get good grades. However, the Italian lesson is very difficult for me, it is hard to listen or speak the language. I think understanding the grammar is easier than remembering the vocabulary. Frequently, I forget the words that I just learned a week ago. I try to memorize verbs but they are the most difficult for me to remember. When a person speaks to me, I often don't know what he/she said because I don't recognize many of the verbs. I can't understand and this is very frustrating and I am often angry. I think I need to try a new method when I study because I don't learn as fast as I had hoped.

For the second week, we continued to learn grammar and specific phrases. GianLuca is a very good teacher and his humor helped me to progress. The best moments of this week was during my trip to San Lucido with my father, Pasquale, and my aunt, Carmela. This time when we took the plane, it wasn't late. The trip was incredible solely because my father's cousins are fantastic people. My father had never visited the city for forty-one years and they accepted him without hestitation. Line and Maria are my second cousins and they are very nice and enthusiastic women. They didn't let my father or I say, "no thanks" to food. (and it was very delicious). The city is beautiful and classical, in the middle of the tall montains and the incredible ocean.

If San Lucido was beautiful, Rome was formidable. Personally, I don't think that something is more incredible than San Lucido because I was with my father while he saw his childhood home. However, the Colosseum and the Castel d'Angelo were magnificent. Claudio and I had wanted to see the art of Michelangelo in the chapel but the line was very long. I hope to see Rome when I return to Italy with my family.

Hiking in Cinque Terre with Perry Hosmer

Here is Perry Hosmer's description of his hike through Cinque Terre. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

_______________________________________________________________________
This week was also a great experience for me, in Italy. Let’s start where I left off in my journal last week, at Cinque Terre. After a beautiful day at the beach in Monterosso, one of the five lands, we went to the hostel in the hills of Cinque Terre. This trip was interesting for all of us because we had to climb for a bit up the hill because the bus doesn’t go the whole way up the road to the hostel. Some people were frustrated with this minor problem, but that was nothing compared to the walk the next day up and down Cinque Terre.

We woke up very early that morning, because the people who were taking the walk, me included, didn’t want to climb the hills when the sun was very strong. The walk was difficult like John said but it was more difficult than I had thought. We weren’t able to go on the path that we had wanted, I think because the rocks were very dangerous. Therefore, we went up one very difficult part, early on in the walk. There were points where we needed to stop to drink water, but it was totally worth it. The photos that I took on the hills were absolutely perfect. Finally, when we arrived at the end of the fourth land, we were very tired and our legs were like marble, we decided to take the train to Monterosso. I was thirsty, hungry, and tired all at the same time, so this was a good experience for me. At the beach, I took a nap, sunbathed, and I ate very quickly also.
It was a surprise for me that I didn’t sleep much that night. I did a lot during the week, specifically during the weekend. I would have been ready to sleep ten hours, but I slept for about five. My mind was racing for most of the night. This could be due to the fact that I was thinking about the great weekend, but it was for another reason. I was thinking about my family and the fact that it would have been weeks before I could spend time with my parents. As much as I like Italy, I still like my family more.
Monday, I thought that I would have been able to be with my family for the whole day, because it was Memorial Day in the United States. Classes went well and I learned new things, but after class, my mind wasn’t able to make me happy. While I ate a frozen pizza, I thought about eating grilled chicken and fresh fruit that my family probably was eating for lunch. All of my thoughts and the long weekend that I had spent helped me to fall asleep quickly that night.

Le Cinque Terre with Sammy Falgiani

Here is the story of student Sammy Falgiani about her experience at Cinque Terre. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

Cinque Terre is the most beautiful land that I have ever seen in my life! The ocean is clear and a beautiful shade of blue. The ocean was a bit cold but the sun was very hot! The sun was strong! I sunbathed and swam all afternoon. After the train to the next land, my friend Mary and I ate a pizza margherita. All of the students took a bus for a bit to the next stop. The panorama was lovely at the top of the mountain. I was able to see the ocean and colorful things and more mountains in the distance. We discovered that there wasn't a possibility to take another bus to our hostel. We walked and it was very beautiful. The city with our hostel was very old and was the vision of Italy that I had in my head before coming here. This was my first time being in a hostel. From the people that I know, it was not that bad. The man that manages the hostel was funny for no particular reason.
The people here are very nice. When we walked on the roads, the people would say, "Good evening." I took many pictures of Cinque Terre. I took a short walk with my friends Mary and Jess. Maybe I took too many pictures but I didn't want to miss anything because I only have one occasion to take pictures here for my book. The next morning we woke up at 7am. We took a bus and after we walked, I walked alone between one land and the other, although I wanted to walk all the way to the end. It was better to take pictures. The panorama of everything as always was beautiful. The other students and I took a boat to the beach that we had went to the day before. Once again I had a good pizza margherita and after I didn't leave the beach all day until it was time to take the train. At the beach, I didn't see any fish! I didn't encounter many people here. And so, I didn't have many occasions when an Italian talked with me.

Italy is extremely beautiful and very enjoyable but I would like to come here with my best friends. But, in the future, I will be able to function better here!
