Looking Back at Italy with LisaMarie Gaeta

Lastly, here is my blog entry, from the student who has been composing this blog. Come sempre, like always, the Italian description is first and the English translation follows it. =]

Hi everyone, finally its my turn to write a post. These six weeks have gone by quickly. I am a bit sad to leave Genoa, the school A Door to Italy, and Italy. However, I had a great experience here with my friends and the Italian people. It was very difficult in the beginning to speak only in italian, especially because I had studied the language for only two quarters at RIT before I arrived here. I was always frustrated because I didn't know much vocabulary and other useful phrases. However, I studied Spanish for many years and this helped me learn Italian.

A Door to Italy is a great school and I liked the classes. The professors are nice, fun, and helpful. GianLuca is a great professor, and he really helped me improve my skills. My favorite activity was the educational games. They were interesting and I had fun trying to understand when we had to make a section of a conversation which we had listened to in class the day before. They helped me learn useful words and how to say my sentences with emphasis just like Italians do. I also liked creating and writing creative stories.

I enjoyed being in Genova and Italy in general. The people are very interesting and nice. In the first weeks, I couldn't understand that much when I heard people in the street. Now, I can understand much more and I am glad because I can understand most of the conversations that I pass by in the streets and when I have conversations with people.

The food is superb, the pizza, pasta, ice cream... everything is incredible.  At least I won't miss the food because it's the same that my grandpa makes every Sunday.

I am proud of this blog and happy to share these stories with all of you. It was very interesting to read and translate the descriptions of my friends. I know them better now and I feel more connected with them. Also, I learned  a ot from them. I hope you have all enjoyed them.

Ricardo Rodriguez Relaxes in Liguria

This is Ricardo Rodriguez's experience during his free weekend in Sestri Levanti, Liguria. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it. (pictures to come)

Domenica siamo andati a Sestri Levanti.

Last Friday I went to play soccer with GianLuca, a professor at the school, Dominic, Claudio and some of GianLuca's friends. We went to a place outside the historic center Genoa. Since I don't know how to play soccer, I ran where they were playing. I liked it and was a good experience to meet other Italians.
Saturday I didn't do anything because I was very tired and I needed a day to relax and rest. We had planned to go to the beach at Sestri Levanti but we were very tired. I got a gelato with Claudio and then I came back home to sleep.
Sunday we went to Sestri Levanti. It was cloudy in the beginning of the day but by midday, the sun came out. I tanned in the sun. I liked the sea, the sand was white and beautiful. In the center there were many people and many places were open. We ate sandwiches that we had mad at our house. At Sestri we had eaten cannolis and other great desserts. I liked them the most and I would like a few days to visit Sicily. At the beach we met a student from Switzerland who was studying Italian at our school. She was there with her husband. At 4 we finished at the beach and we returned to Genoa. It was a good weekend but I am ready for Torino. I think that time is going by quickly. Yes, I am very happy that I have many good friends here in the program and they are making my experience here in Genoa even better.

Nicole Formisano's Anticipation of the Alps

Nicole Formisano describes a helpful Italian conversation and her desire to sing in the Alps. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

For my weekend I did a lot of work, but at the same time I didn't do anything. Saturday, I started working on my thesis. I had two classes to draft my thesis, but now I need to fix the errors, change my bibliography, and also start coding for my research for the advertisements that I have found in the cities we have visited.

Then, after work, we needed to go to Vodafone. My blackberry had lots of problems with SMS and therefore Vodafone, the sister company of Verizon, maybe could have been able to help me. I went to Vodafone and I waited for approximately thirty minutes. There were a lot of people with cell phone problems.  I was nervous because I needed to speak in Italian about a difficult subject. However, to my surprise the woman had understood me but wasn't able to help me. Because my Blackberry was in English, she wasn't able to fix the problems. However I liked this experience because it helped me with my Italian. Furthermore, it was interesting because there are many English words that are used for cell phones and therefore, I think that I used Italian when I was able to use English.

Sunday morning, Lea, Lindsey and I went to Nervi only for 2 hours to tan for a bit. I met a woman on the beach who continuously talked about how the weather was hot. After Nervi I returned to my house and worked again. I feel that there will always be work for my thesis. :( Now, I am ready for Terme/Torino! This is because "The Sound of Music" is my favorite movie and like Elisabetta said, the Italian Alps are similar to the Alps in "The Sound of Music." Maybe I can be Julia Andrews for a day :)

Dominic Fioretti's First 2 Weeks at A Door to Italy

Dominic Fioretti describes his obstacles while learning Italian during his first two weeks in Italy. He also wrote about his experience meeting his family in San Lucido. The Italian description is first and the English translation follows it.

For the first week of school, we met the professors for our lessons. For the language lesson, we have GianLuca and Stefano, while for the culture lesson we have Alessandro. All the professors are very nice and patient. That is good because I learn slowly. The classes were very good even though I didn't understand everything that Stefano and GianLuca said. Tipically, I am good at school and get good grades. However, the Italian lesson is very difficult for me, it is hard to listen or speak the language. I think understanding the grammar is easier than remembering the vocabulary. Frequently, I forget the words that I just learned a week ago. I try to memorize verbs but they are the most difficult for me to remember. When a person speaks to me, I often don't know what he/she said because I don't recognize many of the verbs. I can't understand and this is very frustrating and I am often angry. I think I need to try a new method when I study because I don't learn as fast as I had hoped.

For the second week, we continued to learn grammar and specific phrases. GianLuca is a very good teacher and his humor helped me to progress. The best moments of this week was during my trip to San Lucido with my father, Pasquale, and my aunt, Carmela. This time when we took the plane, it wasn't late. The trip was incredible solely because my father's cousins are fantastic people. My father had never visited the city for forty-one years and they accepted him without hestitation. Line and Maria are my second cousins and they are very nice and enthusiastic women. They didn't let my father or I say, "no thanks" to food. (and it was very delicious). The city is beautiful and classical, in the middle of the tall montains and the incredible ocean.

If San Lucido was beautiful, Rome was formidable. Personally, I don't think that something is more incredible than San Lucido because I was with my father while he saw his childhood home. However, the Colosseum and the Castel d'Angelo were magnificent. Claudio and I had wanted to see the art of Michelangelo in the chapel but the line was very long. I hope to see Rome when I return to Italy with my family.
